Sri Lanka Style Delicious Chicken Biryani Recipe

Sri Lanka is the island country located in the south of Asia and it is near to south-east India. When we looked into Sri Lankan cuisine we will get that, it is influenced by many cultural, historical, and other factors. Since British colonialists are ruled on Sri Lanka the salient impact of their cuisine seen on Sri Lankan cuisine, also the cuisine of traders and Southern Indian cuisine is impacted on it. 

Nowadays rice, coconut and spices are the staples of Sri Lankan cuisine. Along with this fish, chicken, beef, mutton are important in non-vegetarian dishes and vegetables, lentils & fruits are for vegetarian dishes. Kottu, Hoppers, String Hoppers, Lamprais, Kool, Puttu, and Roti are some dishes from Sri Lankan Cuisine.
 
The biryani is made from all types of meat and also from vegetables in Sri Lanka. Here we are going to share the recipe for the chicken biryani in Sri Lankan style. Let begin for it...

Sri Lankan Chicken Biryani Recipe 

Ingredients for Biryani:

  •  1 1/2 cup of rice.
  • 500 gm chicken Breast (bite-size chopped). 
  • 1 tsp curry powder.
  • 2 tsp biryani masala. 
  •  1 tsp black pepper powder.
  • 3 tsp oil. 
  • 1 tsp ghee. 
  • 1 large onion. 
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste. 
  • 5-6 cloves. 
  • 1 tsp turmeric.
  •  2 tsp cumin seeds.
  • 3-4 cardamon pods. 
  • 1 small stick cinnamon.
  • 1 handful coriander. 
  •  1 half handful mint.
  • 1 chopped tomato. 
  • 3-4 green chilies. 
  • 2 tsp Yogurt.
  •  2 tsp Lemon juice.
  • 1 tsp chili powder. 


Directions for Cooking Sri Lankan Chicken Biryani:

  1. Take a pot and add chicken with ginger garlic paste, chili powder, curry powder, black pepper powder, Biryani masala and turmeric powder in it. 
  2. Stir the chicken and spices mixture until the layer of the masalas is created on the chicken. Keep it aside.
  3. Now take the oil in another pot and heat it. Once it gets heated fry the cardamom, cumin seeds, cloves, and cinnamon for  2 minutes. Then add mint and coriander and saute it for a minute.
  4. After that add marinated chicken and add 1 tsp ghee mix it well and cook the chicken until it 50% cooked. 
  5. Add tomatoes and green chili in it then cook for 5-10 minutes on low flame then add yogurt and lemon juice mix it well and cook for another 10 minutes (make sure that chicken did not get fully cooked).
  6.  Now take the water in another pan add some turmeric in it then allow it to boil. Once water gets boiled add washed and soaked rice in it. 
  7. Once the rice gets cooked about 75-85%, keep it aside, and drain water from it.
  8. In a large pan make the layer of rice then the layer of chicken and again layer of rice on it. Then sprinkle li water on it. 
  9. Cover the pan and keep it on the low heat until the chicken and rice gets fully cooked.
  10. Here your Sri Lankan Chicken Biryani gets ready. Mix the chicken and rice before serving and enjoy it.

Note:  It is good to marinate the chicken for overnight if it is not possible then it is OK with 1/2 to 1 hour.
