This chicken pulao recipe is more delicious and it is very simple, easy and quick to make with simple and few ingredients list which is easily available in any grocery shop. Chicken pulao is my family's favorite recipe and I made this recipe for my family once in a week. This recipe is simple, quick and perfect for busy schedules as well as it is perfect weeknight dinner. Actually, this chicken pulao recipe is made in either pressure cooker or pot but in this post, I have share chicken pulao recipe made in the pressure cooker.
Chicken pulao is a tasty, delicious and mouth-watering dish made with basmati rice, meat, veggies, and some spices and chicken pulao is mildly spiced not heavily spice like chicken biryani but the pulao is nothing less than chicken biryani. This recipe is a substitute for biryani and it is a perfect dish for festivals, parties or any occasion.

What is the chicken pulao?
Chicken pulao is also known as chicken tahari and it is made with basmati rice, meat, veggies and spices and spices give an aromatic flavor to the chicken pulao and it is interesting to make than making simple pulao. In this recipe, I have cooked chicken curry for 10 minutes and then added washed and soaked rice in cooked chicken curry and again it is cooked.
As we everyone knows this amazing chicken pulao featuring with basmati rice, marinated chicken and some aromatic spices.  In the chicken pulao recipe washed and soaked basmati rice cooked with marinated chicken, onions, tomato, green chilies, and whole spices.

Ingredients needed to make chicken pulao

Here is a ingredients list to make chicken pulao recipe at home

Ingredients needed for marinate
  • 2 boneless and skinless chicken breast (roughly sliced).
  • ½ cup curd.
  • 2 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste.
  • ½ teaspoon coriander powder.
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin powder.
  • ½ teaspoon paprika.
  • ½ teaspoon olive oil.
  • Salt ( to taste).
Ingredients needed for rice
  • 1 cup basmati rice.
  • 1 tablespoon oil.
  • 2 cups water.
  • 1 medium onion (lengthwise sliced).
  • 1 tomato (lengthwise sliced).
  • 3 green chilies (half lengthwise cut)
  • 1 ½ teaspoon ginger garlic paste.
  • 1 ½ tablespoon cilantro (finely chopped).
  • ½ teaspoon green cardamom powder.
  • Salt (to taste).
 Whole spices used for pulao
  • 1-star anise.
  • 2 bay leaf.
  • 3 to 4 cloves.
  • 1 black cardamom.
  • ½ teaspoon cumin seeds.

Step by step process to make chicken pulao recipe

Here is a pulao recipe made with chicken breast. Most of the time pulao is made with chicken tights but in this post, I have shared chicken pulao made with chicken breast. In this post, I have shared how to make chicken pulao recipe at home.

Chicken marinate
  1. Take one large bowl and add chicken, ½ cup curd, 2 teaspoon ginger garlic paste, ½ teaspoon coriander powder, ¼ teaspoon cumin powder, ½ teaspoon paprika, ½ teaspoon olive oil, Salt ( to taste).
  2. And mix well all the ingredients and keep aside.
Preparation for rice
  1. Wash the basmati rice to get rid of the starch.
  2. Then soak the rice for 15 minutes in water and drain it and keep aside ( soaking helps to cook rice grains more fluffy).
The main chicken pulao recipe
  1. Heat the cooker on medium-high flame and then add oil once the oil is hot add the whole spices like star anise, bay leaf, cloves, cardamom, cumin seeds and sauté all the spices until it begins to smell nice.
  2. Then add onion, ginger-garlic paste, tomato, and green chilies and fry it until onion turns brown color then add salt and cardamom powder mix it well.
  3. Then transfer the marinated chicken in onion and tomato mixture and mix it well and cook until chicken turns white in color.
  4. Then add washed and soaked basmati rice in it and again mix it well.
  5. Add water and cover the lid of the cooker and cook the rice for 10 minutes on high flame ( give minimum 3 to 4 whistles).
  6. Chicken pulao is ready to serve.
  7. Remove the chicken pulao in the serving dish, garnish with cilantro and serve it.

  • Serve this delicious, tasty and mouth-watering chicken pulao with curry or yogurt raita.

Tips to make chicken pulao
  • If you don’t want a bite into a whole spice then you can replace whole spices with store-bought garam masala powder.
  • Always wash basmati rice at least twice.
  • If you don’t like cilantro leaves then replace is with coriander or mint leaves.
  • Marinate chicken for 30 minutes.

  • Firstly wash and soak the rice.
  • Then take one large bowl and add chicken, curd, ginger garlic paste, coriander powder, cumin powder, paprika, olive oil, Salt ( to taste) and mix it well and keep aside (marinate for 30 minutes).
  • Heat cooker and add oil and once is hot.
  • Then add onion, ginger-garlic paste, tomato, green chilies, salt, and cardamom powder mix it well.
  • Then add marinated chicken and soaked rice mix it well add water and cook it for 10 minutes.
  • Chicken is ready to serve.
